Qué hacer y qué no hacer después de la extracción de las muelas del juicio

Recovering after wisdom teeth removal is typically straightforward when you carefully follow your oral surgeon’s post-operative instructions. Rest, proper hydration, good nutrition, and following your medication schedule all play an important role in helping your mouth heal comfortably and reducing the risk of complications.
To make your recovery easier, we’ve created this simple guide outlining what you should—and shouldn’t—do after your wisdom teeth extraction.
What to Do After Wisdom Teeth Removal
- Bite gently on the gauze provided for the first one to two hours after surgery to help control bleeding and encourage a healthy blood clot to form.
- Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping for the first few days to help minimize swelling.
- Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for the first 48-72 horas. Use them for 20 minutos y 20 minutes off while you’re awake.
- Switch to warm compresses after the first 48 hours if recommended to help relieve jaw stiffness.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other non-carbonated beverages.
- Eat soft, nourishing foods después de cirugía. Begin with liquids the first day, then gradually introduce soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, puré, scrambled eggs, batidos (without a straw), and soup. Return to your normal diet as your comfort allows.
- Take all medications exactly as prescribed to manage discomfort and reduce the risk of infection.
- Gently open and close your mouth throughout the day to prevent jaw stiffness.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water beginning the day after surgery, allowing the water to flow out of your mouth without forcefully spitting.
- Get plenty of rest and avoid overexertion for the first few days after your procedure.
What Not to Do After Wisdom Teeth Extraction
To help ensure proper healing and prevent complications like dry socket, avoid the following:
- Do not participate in strenuous exercise por al menos 72 hours or until your surgeon says it’s safe.
- No use pajillas, vape, or smoke, as the suction can dislodge the protective blood clot.
- Do not eat crunchy, hard, picante, or sticky foods such as popcorn, papas fritas, nueces, or hard candy during the first week.
- Do not spit forcefully or rinse vigorously for the first 24 horas.
- Do not skip doses of your prescribed medications unless directed by your surgeon.
- Do not touch the extraction site with your fingers, lengua, or any objects.
- Do not drink alcoholic or carbonated beverages during the early stages of healing unless your surgeon advises otherwise.
