One of the questions we get most often from patients considering implants is, “Will I be without teeth after dental implant surgery?” There is no simple answer. For many patients, the answer will be no. Still, others may have a waiting period, mainly if their implant surgery is complex or they need bone grafting before their implants are placed. However, several options are available to ensure most patients don’t have to go without teeth for an extended period.

Same Day Teeth: Immediate Loading

Many patients opt for immediate loading, also known as Same Day Teeth. With this approach, Dr. Valiente will place your implants one day, and your permanent prosthetic or crowns will be placed on the same day. This type of dental implant requires close collaboration between Dr. Valiente and your dentist or prosthodontist. With Same Day Teeth, you walk out of our office with your new teeth on the same day. While this option offers the convenience of not being without teeth, it’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions diligently to ensure proper healing.

Temporary Crowns & Prosthetics

Another option is to have temporary crowns or prosthetics placed over the implants while they heal. These temporary solutions mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits. Temporary crowns or prosthetics allow you to maintain normal chewing and speaking abilities during healing, minimizing any inconvenience. However, despite having functional teeth, you must stick to a soft diet during the healing phase. You could compromise the healing process if you bite down on anything hard or tough during this phase.

Overdentures

Overdentures are removable temporary dentures that are secured onto dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the gums, overdentures snap onto implants, providing greater stability and preventing bone loss in the jaw. Overdentures can be used immediately after implant placement, allowing you to have teeth throughout the entire process. They offer a comfortable and reliable temporary solution until the permanent prosthetic is ready.

Importance of Waiting If Needed

While immediate loading and temporary solutions offer the benefit of not being without teeth, it’s crucial to understand that sometimes waiting is necessary for optimal results. In some cases, immediate loading may not be advisable due to factors such as bone density, implant stability, or the case’s complexity. In such instances, Dr. Valiente will clearly explain his recommendations and why he believes you need to wait for proper healing before attaching the permanent prosthetic. Patience during the healing process ensures the long-term success of dental implants and reduces the risk of complications.

Dental implant surgery is a transformative procedure that can restore your smile and improve your quality of life. While the prospect of being without teeth during the process may seem daunting, various options are available to ensure you can maintain a functional and aesthetic smile throughout the treatment. Whether Dr. Valiente recommends immediate loading, temporary crowns, overdentures, or waiting for the final prosthetic, he will work closely with your dentist or prosthodontist to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
